Keyword cannibalization in SEO refers to times when new pages, posts, or products are created with duplicate keywords - which takes the focus off of the core terms that really matter. This can damage search engine rankings and frustrate a company's marketing department.

Keyword cannibalization in SEO would be defined as the practice of having multiple pages on a website with similar keywords and phrases, thus reducing the effectiveness of each page. For example, if you have two pages having very similar content and keywords, your rankings for those keywords on either page will be less than your overall rankings. This is based upon how Google interprets the content of those two or more pages; they are considered duplicate content and so one is given less authority or weighting than the other.

Keyword cannibalization has become a huge problem in search engine optimization for many websites over the years, especially after the Panda and Penguin algorithm updates. Search engine optimization is about increasing your visibility on the results page, not decreasing it. You do not want to be an accidental victim of keyword cannibalization.
